Henry Adams Thompson (born March 23, 1837 – July 8, 1920) was a noted prohibitionist who was the vice-presidential nominee of the Prohibition Party in 1880. Former U.S. General Neal Dow of Maine was the presidential nominee.〔http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=352151〕 Thompson was born in Stormstown, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College) in 1858 and studied at Western Theological seminary (now Pittsburgh Theological Seminary). In 1861 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Western College in Shueyville, Iowa. In 1872 he became president of Otterbein College. He left the Republican Party in 1874 and joined the Prohibition Party as a prominent writer and activist. He was the party's nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Ohio in 1874, chairman of the Prohibition National Convention in 1876, and President of the National Prohibition Alliance in 1877. He was the Prohibition Party's vice presidential nominee in 1880, and its nominee for Governor of Ohio in 1887. Thompson received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Otterbein College in 1873, and an honorary LL.D. from Westfield College of Illinois in 1886. He died in Dayton, Ohio on July 8, 1920.
